Lewis and Harris Youth Clubs Association
Aim of the Association
"To help young people in the Lewis and Harris area of the Western Isles through leisure time activities so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society."
Background to the Scaladale Centre
The Lewis and Harris Youth Clubs Association (LHYCA) is a voluntary youth organisation located in the Western Isles. In April 1996 the LHYCA officially launched a fund raising campaign in attempt to raise funds towards a new multi-function Residential / Outdoor Centre at Ardvourlie on Harris.
It was proposed to build the facility on the site of what was an outdoor adventure base since 1970 previously run by Northampton Association of Youth Clubs. Some time ago the NAYC decided that because of the deterioration of the building and the distance factor, between Northampton and Harris, they were unable to progress with the development of a new facility. They then gifted the building to the LHYCA who, in turn, decided that the best way forward would be to build a new multi activity and provide users with the same level of service and activities as they have enjoyed in the past.
After many years of hard work, numerous meetings and fundraising the Scaladale Centre is here, providing a much needed modern facility for the youth of the Island to enjoy and for groups from all over the world to experience what is the Western Isles.
We hope groups will enjoy using the facility and will appreciate the many years of dedication from volunteers who saw the need for a new Centre on the Island.
